Benefits of Flotation Therapy

What is Flotation Therapy?

Flotation-Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) consists of a soundproof, lightproof tank filled with Epsom salt and water, allowing the client to float effortlessly. The water is kept at skin temperature to reduce sensory input. Earplugs are provided help to decrease auditory stimuli. The sensory deprivation environment leads to deep relaxation and reduced brain stimulation. Research indicates there are many benefits Flotation-REST can help with, including reduced anxiety and depression, alleviation of chronic pain, enhancement of creative and cognitive function, and improved cardiac function.

How did Flotation-REST start?

A neuroscientist named John C. Lilly created the first sensory deprivation tank in 1954. Lilly played a significant role in popularizing floatation tanks and researched the effects of sensory deprivation using deep water immersion. Years later, in 1968, Peter Suedfeld started researching flotation-REST. Academic research on flotation-REST has become global, and now several review papers provide information on the potential benefits of this therapy.

What are the benefits?

Flotation-REST therapy is not only a great self-care activity, but it offers many amazing benefits.

  • Decreases anxiety and depression: Flotation-REST increases serenity and reduces anxiety and depression up to 48 hours post-flotation session. Research indicates that consistency is vital when it comes to managing anxiety with flotation-REST. Anxiety levels were significantly lower at session five versus session one. A calming environment with reduced sensory input can help reduce feelings of anxiety.

  • Alleviates chronic pain: There have been many studies on the effects of flotation-REST on pain. Pain reduction could be secondary to its ability to induce deep relaxation. Deep relaxation can alleviate the pain caused by muscle tension. The weightless environment also reduces pressure on the muscles and joints, easing discomfort.

  • Enhances creativity and cognitive function: Different studies have shown enhanced creativity in different areas, including scientific creativity, musical ability, creative problem-solving, and divergent thinking. The reduction in sensory input encourages mindfulness that can unlock creative insights. The unique environment encourages the mind to enter a relaxed and meditative state, allowing the participant to explore their thoughts on a deeper level.

  • Improves cardiac function: Flotation therapy significantly lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and breathing rate. High levels of stress can increase blood pressure. Flotation-REST therapy induces a relaxed state that can help lower blood pressure levels.

As someone who has floated before, floating is such a unique experience. Every time I float, my experience is different from the time before. One thing that is always consistent is that I leave feeling more relaxed and calmer. Floating is one of my favorite self-care activities. The benefits are a bonus and lead to relaxation and overall well-being.
